Magazine Production
Front Cover
Before I made any sketches of a front cover for my magazine,
I looked at the front covers of magazines that my target audience
buys. However, I didn't just take inspiration from fashion magazines, I looked
at review magazines for films and games as well to look how they were
structured.
I did this because my magazine topic is 'nerdy'
fashion, and I want to blend the genres together to make my magazine appealing
towards my target audience. It was also because that from my research into what
magazines already exist that are familiar to the idea of my own, I discovered
that there weren't any that focused on 'nerdy' fashion. Not only did this show
a need for my magazine, but it also left me with the problem of designing it as
I had no magazines in that specific genre to gain inspiration from.
Despite the two
genres of magazines sharing codes and conventions, their designs are
clearly made to catch the eye- although in different ways. Film and gaming
magazines tend to use the main image as the way to catch the viewer's attention
with bright imagery, often action-based with movement that makes the image look
exciting and enticing. Fashion magazines however use secondary coverlines to
show off the most important/ appealing stories and features inside to the
audience.
I'm using the colours black, white and orange for my magazine. The justification for these colours are that black and white were the most popular choices from my survey and to prevent the design from looking dull and unappealing I used orange as a connotative colour. I chose to use orange as the third colour because of it's psychological associations that I want my magazine to have, some of which are joy, enthusiasm, creativity, encouragement, fun, freedom and fascination. This is because I want my magazine to be accepting and embrace different ideas on subjects by promoting these associations. The combination of the colours looks modern and simple, and by using a bright colour with a monochrome colour scheme, it makes the parts 'pop' and attracts and directs the viewers attention to the colour.

The first step I took to creating my front cover was to make
sure I selected the right options for the blank canvas on Photoshop.
Because I'm creating a physical magazine, the measurements
for an A4 page are 21cm by 29.7cm, with 300 pixels per inch. The colour mode is
CMYK, so the colours will be accurate to those on my monitor in regards to my
magazine's design.
After adding a
background colour on a new layer, I made my magazine's masthead.
To do this I had to download a new font "Small Fonts
Regular" as I needed a decorative font that was pixelated for the
"8-Bit" section of my magazine's name. This was a problem as I began
the production of my front cover at college where I can't download fonts, so I
had to leave that part of the masthead as a generic font till I got home and could
download the font.
For the word "Chic" I wanted a cursive font that
would look fancy yet still be legible and compliment the other font in the
masthead. I used an already installed font, "Segoe Script Regular".
The
next step I took was to add an issue number/dateline and price tag, as well as
a barcode.
Afterwards I put in a few secondary coverlines and a tagline.
I was unsure of where to place the coverlines as I haven't taken any
photos yet for my main image, so I've put them in to move them around later
when I add the main image.
Finally, I added my main image after a photography session
with a friend.
I moved around the secondary coverlines to suit the image
and put in another as there was too much negative space on the page and it
looked empty. I encountered a problem here as I wanted to put in another
secondary coverline to the left of the page in the empty corner, however
because the colour of the font I've used is white the coverline blended in with
the clapperboard stick so some of it became unreadable. Because of this
I had to forgo that coverline.
Another feature that I put into the design is a small banner
at the bottom of the page, as it looked blank and dull with the lack of a
lighter colour.
Contents Page
For my contents page, I pictured it looking like a scrapbook where all of the information is displayed in a clear order with decoration and photos.
The first steps I took with making my contents page were to get the correct canvas on Photoshop and make the background. To make the background look like a scrapbook I used the marquee tool to make a black rectangle in the centre of the page with a white banner around it. I then used a tape brush that I downloaded from brusheezy around the edges of the black to make it look like the tape is holding it down to the white.

Next
I added “contents page” to the top left of the page to clearly label what this
page was about. The placement of the text is important for readers as in
western society we read from top left to right. I added a bar under this that
is a smaller version of the banner at the bottom of my front cover to link the
page designs together.
After
this I added the list of contents in my magazine, with two other sets of pages
that I haven’t made. I did this to fill up the space on the page as it looked
empty at the bottom.
Initially
I was going to have the photos appear stuck to the page with the same tape
brush as the background, however when I did this the effect looked overused and
messy. Instead I looked for a polaroid picture frame for them which I think
looks better than my original idea.
I
added a date between the banner as well as the magazine’s logo above it. I did
this to not only keep the branding throughout the magazine but to show when in
time that this magazine’s content is relevant.
The
final step of my contents page was to add a few extra details, such as a small
comment on the photos and social media links at the bottom of the page. I put
in links to social media as seen from my primary research survey my target
audience also reads magazines online, so they’ll most likely be interested in
following extra features on social media as well.

Second Advert Production
For my second advert, I decided to advertise a lipstick that I created based on the game series “Assassin’s Creed”. I got the inspiration to do this from GeekChicCosmetics.com, where they sell makeup products such as eyeshadows, lipsticks, foundations, primers, etc. with names and colours taken and inspired from books, games, films, television shows and other forms of media. I named the lipstick “Nothing is True” because it’s a well-known quotation from the game series.

After getting the right-sized canvas on photoshop, I began with editing a close-up photo of a friend for my main image. The first problem I ran into whilst making this advert was getting the effect that I wanted on the photo. My initial idea was to turn the image mode to grayscale and use the history brush to return the colour to her lips. However, when I did this the photo looked too bright from the background. This is because when I took the photo it was sunny. The photo would’ve worked better if it was taken with a darker background. So instead I reduced the saturation of the image so it still retained a minimal amount of colour which helped the lips blend in better.

Because the lips weren’t the colour I wanted the lipstick, I used the colour replacement tool to recolour her lips into a bright red. Although this did the job I wanted, it looks out of place as it looks fake.

Because the lips weren’t the colour I wanted the lipstick, I used the colour replacement tool to recolour her lips into a bright red. Although this did the job I wanted, it looks out of place as it looks fake.

To counter this issue and make the recolour look more natural,
I blended the lips with the blur filter to look smoother and less harsh around
the edges.
For this advert, I wanted to include an image of the product
that I had made. For this I found two images of the lipstick (one open, closed)
on google images. After I put them into Photoshop, I removed the brand logo on
the sides and replaced them with the “Assassin’s Creed” logo. I then recoloured
the lipstick to match the red of Kacy’s lips.
Finally, I added the name of my product and a “coming soon”
note at the bottom. The colour of the font matches the colour of the logo on
the lipsticks.
Product Feedback
The feedback was one of the biggest problems that I faced during my FMP, as I only had two responses to my survey. This prevented me from getting a wide variety of opinions on my magazine, making it difficult to see how well others viewed it and their suggestions on improvements.
